The Singapore women’s football squad for the 2023 SEA Games has been announced.
A majority of the team were part of the recent Olympic 2024 qualifiers, including overseas-based players Putri Syaliza (Oakland University) and Danelle Tan (London Bees).
Three players – Lila Tan, Raudhah Kamis and Sitianiwati Rosielin – will also make their first appearance in the SEA Games.
Most of the selected players that made the cut had made their debut in last year’s SEA Games.
Head coach Karim Bencherifa, who recently took over as the head coach of the women’s team – explained that the finalised selection was made after centralised training since the team’s return from their Olympic 2024 qualifiers campaign in Thailand.
In that campaign, Singapore lost 6-0 against Thailand and drew 1-1 against Mongolia.
Karim said that the squad has a “balanced mix of players” who have experience playing overseas, senior players who have had multiple caps for Singapore, as well as exciting young talents.
“I am hopeful that the team possesses all the necessary ingredients to execute our plan in Cambodia, including quality players, high level of fitness, good strategies, and great team spirit,” he added.
The Lionesses will face Thailand, Laos and hosts Cambodia in the group stages of the SEA Games competition.
The squad, which recently completed a three-day training camp in Kuala Lumpur, will travel to Cambodia on Apr 30 and begin their campaign against Thailand on May 3.
All of Singapore’s matches will be streamed live on Mediacorp’s meWATCH platform, said FAS.
