In Canada, Fairmont almost had a full house, with an incredible six resorts in the list, though the competitively priced, scene-stealing Nita Lake Lodge edged ahead as the overall winner. Sixteen years after Bill Bensley designed the canvases at the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Thailand, safari-inspired glamping shows no signs of breaking camp, with Al Maha embedded in the sand dunes of Dubai, while Costa Rica’s eco resorts are increasingly fertile. Recently launched Six Senses Shaharut may not have tents, but its incredible location is helping to open up Israel’s Negev wilderness to travellers. Top scorers in our new “community” criteria – in other words, how you felt the resort supported local people and interests – included Bali’s The Laguna and Capella Lodge on Australia’s Lord Howe Island, along with the Namibian outpost of Burning Man favourite Habitas, one of the most striking recent openings in Africa; when it came to activities and experiences, Mashpi Lodge in Ecuador was among the most accomplished early risers. In Europe, the Ikos group is proving popular for its fresh take on the all-inclusive, while MarBella Elix, opened in 2021, rated top for location – a pretty unbeatable one on the Greek mainland looking over the Ionian Sea. And Adare Manor was one of the best resorts for food, with a lyrical menu of ingredients plucked from Co. Limerick’s fields and waters.
