 Whilst successful destination marketing has many
key components, if you do not have the necessary connectivity – be
it by air, sea or land – you are always going to be fighting an
uphill battle.

Those living in Australia and New Zealand have
long known about the warm hospitality and stunning natural beauty
that awaits them in Solomon Islands, an archipelago of almost
1,000 islands in the South Pacific, but ask people further afield
to point to the country on a map, or enquire how they would get
there, and many would struggle.

To find out more about the country and its tourism
business, Steven Howard of TravelNewsAsia.com spoke with Dagnal
Dereveke, Acting CEO of Tourism Solomons, over a Zoom call on
Monday, 3 July 2023.

In this exclusive interview, Dagnal tells us how
the country and the national carrier, Solomon Airlines, is
addressing the challenge of air connectivity, whether the
airports in the country are capable of handling large jets, and
which routes he would most like to see take off.

We discuss visitor arrival numbers, what the
country’s targets are for this year and next, how Tourism Solomons
will use the XVII Pacific Games (#Sol2023) it will host between 19
November and 2 December to expand awareness of the country and its
enormous tourism potential, and Steven asks
whether any changes have been made to immigration policies to
attract remote workers, or digital nomads as they are often
called, who may be attracted by extended stay visas.

Dagnal tells us what there is to do in the
country, why someone should choose Solomon Islands over other
island destinations, and gives us an insight into the number of
hotel rooms available and what type of hotel investments the
country is attracting.
