Bowler and spexScholar Darren Ong won his first individual title at the Philippines International Open on May 21, five years after he nearly succeeded in doing so at the Hong Kong International Open 2018 where he brought home a bronze team medal.
Held at Coronado Lanes in Mandaluyong City, Manila, the Philippines International Open saw both Singaporean bowlers Darren and Jazreel secure their places in the Step Ladder Finals. .
Darren had also previously achieved gold in the men’s teams category at the 2017 SEA Games, while Jazreel clinched the gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games and silver during the world bowling championship in 2017 under the women’s team category.
At the Philippines International Open, Darren won the gold medal after beating Malaysia’s Syafiq Ridhwan in the championship round with the score of 248-175.
Jazreel secured the bronze medal at the women’s Open Masters.
She had finished third after being defeated by Malaysia’s Siti Safiyah Amirah 209-191, and eventual champion Philippine’s Alexis Sy.
